Gone. It's finally gone! All of the text is now with our printer for the first publication of Christian Surfers history entitled Groundswell. Its been a long time writing...about 35 years in fact!
The past four months have been focused and the last four weeks manic! We are also producing a coffee-table picture book and poor Aaron has cleaned and scanned over 1000 images!
Well, Gill says I have to be careful cos' I could die now and the book at least would endure so one less reason for God to keep me here...is there more behind that?? Thanks to the 120 people I sourced quotes from - there's no way I could use them all!
A website has been launched to promote the book: www.groundswellbook.com. This is an interactive site - we would love you to head there and share your CS story too!
We need your help to see this book printed!
Unless we raise another $19,000 through our Kickstarter fundraising campaign in the next 25 days we won't be able to afford to print! This a unique and fun way to pre-order the book, get some goodies and help us make sure it gets printed!
Please visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/csinternational/groundswell-the-christian-surfers-story and contribute!
Attached are a few of my favourite pics you can expect to see in the book.
Our Australian launch is October 19th in Sydney, with others happening around key centres. The international launch will be in Hawaii at our international conference on November 8th.

The Desert
After a flight across Australia and then another 10 hours drive north from Perth we set up camp in the early morning at a place I had never been to...
Red Bluff was on my surfing bucket list and did not disappoint!
Big, scary waves hit us on Wednesday, August 8th and I creased my board first wave. Since I was disappointing in the courage department, it was a good excuse to sit in the channel and watch big barrels and courageous desert rats threading them. At least I thought I was in the channel until a 12' clean up set took me out and cleanly snapped the creased board in such a way paddling it had the nose slapping my forehead.

There was diving in aqua blue water; red dust four-wheel driving dodging spinifex grass; clouds of stars stretched across the milky way; cold desert nights around the camp fire; team cooking with all the camping mod-cons; fun left-handers at turtles, and the odd turtle; brilliant sunsets over the ocean; and great company of godly guys as time slowed down.
Yep I would go again...apart from the shark attack there a few days ago.

Dry July - The Wrap
Well 'Dry July' was quite a challenge as I surfed about 4 times without catching a wave, including my Scarborough Boardriders contest! I had conversations with people I'd seen but never really spoken to. I also hung out in the carpark instead of surfing a few times. I should be doing this more, but too busy doing the "work" of Christian Surfers I don't have time to do the ministry of Christian Surfers? I broke Dry July on August 1...well it broke me, as I got caught inside a huge set on my paddle out at Sandon Point on the biggest swell of the year!
I'm off to WA today to the desert waves of Red Bluff 12 hours north of Perth. No reception, no electricity, no water, no nothing except for big left-hand barrells!
Was up to midnight culling photos for the upcoming CS history book! Getting closer, get excited...

Dry July
Well, I am going public with my 'dry july' pledge. Some of the guys in our Austi mens group are giving up alcohol, others sugar, anything they reckon hinders their life with God and for God. For me I am giving up catching waves in July BUT I am still going surfing just the same. This is to test how surrendered my surfing is to God and how much I am focussed on people. Like Jesus said to his mate Peter when he called him "...from now you you won't be catching fish, but catching men." Well, I'm out catching up with surfers, not catching waves for one month. So if you see me in the surf you can be confident I will be saying to you, "Go for it, your wave!"

Asia Visitation 2012
It was tough sitting on the train heading for Sydney International Airport for the fourth time in the past two months, all the more since Gill was staying at home this time. Things looked up as I saw Richo's face there and we flew out to Taiwan to see the couple heading up CS there, Chris and Eliah Chon. Chris has been busy! Eliah was pregnant with their first child last time I saw them three years ago and she met us pregnant with their third! First day saw us attend a surfers memorial paddle out for a friend of Chris who had tragically died on the beach last week. Chris told us, "He said he was feeling a bit off and we tried to offer help or to stay with him but he sent us out to enjoy the waves. I saw him sit down, then lie down. Some of his other friends thought he was sleeping until one noticed the waves lapping up against his leg and he wasn't moving. He died of a heart attack. I am able to tell my friends, you never know when your time is up!" We saw Chris moving amongst the 100 surfers who met at the beach, he is obviously well connected and appreciated. Later we visited the only elementary school in the country that has embraced surfing and the principal said, "Chris comes and coaches the kids, they love him and this sport teaches them to not be afraid of the ocean, while expanding their education." No doubt Chris is laying the foundations for surfing of a new generation in this new surfing nation. We enjoyed local treats of natural hot volcanic pools, amazing food, teaching an English class and 'extreme motor scooter'.
After three days we took Chris and headed to a Chinese surfing location which recently hosted both an ASP longboard men's and women's event and an ISA world teams event. The Chinese government is doing all they can to promote the exotic beach life of this tourist destination. Whilst there I probably only saw around 100 surfers, and I swear I saw at least 100 hotels being built! As our contact brother said, "I went back home for a few months and when I returned, the little village I parked my car at to surf this reef break had been cleared and 8 new hotels were being built!" The other obvious thing was that all tourist information was translated into one language...Russian. Apparently this is the playground for the wealthy Eastern Soviets since the 90's and who wouldn't want to escape a Siberian winter!? "This is my first time," exclaimed a heavy set Russian guy with a longboard who quickly found out this new surfing thing was not so easy. It's equally new for the Chinese who have a traditional fear of the ocean but a very western generation are slowly embracing it.
Our brother has had one friend translating 'On the Rocks' and this has caused her to question the Christian faith that she has had little connection with. They were stoked to have some westerners surf with them in the dribbly beach breaks, followed up next day with a surf trip north to "Dog Meat Bay" (literal translation) and whilst we didn't score many waves the potential and the photos with "you should be here for typhoon season" comments convinced us there are plenty of waves. There has been such massive upheavals in the culture and our friend says, "The communist revolution in some ways did the gospel a service as the slate was wiped clean and God has filled the vacuum by mobilising an amazing movement with thousands of Christians today." We were warmly welcomed as CS and our friend was amazed we would come this far just to visit him.
As we flew out for a 24-hour trip home via Taiwan, Rich and I reflected that Chinese surfing is about to boom and how good it is to get in on the ground early to help shape the culture for good and open to God. Feel free to encourage Chris Chon in Taiwan by emailing him and if you want details on China contact Rich.

European Regional Conference
Onshore winds, no swell and 10 degree temperatures are not what one expects in South West France entering summer. Even more if you are driving 17 hours from Germany for the 7th European CS Conference. However for Jonas and four other Germans coming from the river wave of Munich, they were stoked to meet Christian Surfers and get some inspiration for surf mission.
Phil Williams did a great job gathering 35 surfers from six nations to worship, share, learn and be refreshed for mission to their nations. Special thanks to our French host the gentle giant with an overflowing household of kids - Christophe Parenty.
We heard from Joseba about the media opportunities he has to break down Christian stereotypes amongst the unreached Basque people and set up a surf culture exchange with the Irish. There was Nuno from Portugal entering surf chaplaincy. Kock and Jaap continuing to impact the Dutch Surf Association and supporting CS Brazil with a SUP paddle fundraiser event held on the Rhine River! Marc and the Spaniards are growing into a national movement after their 2nd National Conference. Andreas from Switzerland reported on more outreach surf camps being organised. The video on the UK Jesus Surf Classic revealed the long term impact of 20 years of ministry. Mark shared the huge challenges of doing surf mission to a North African Islamic nation.
And the rain kept coming. Cold and raining. We went for a surf anyway first day then next day a large windswell poured whitewash over breakwalls and showered all who would play chicken with the sea. We had a small disaster as I put diesel into a petrol car (it did have a diesel glow plug light on the dash!) and we were stranded in Hossegor. Dave Reynard helped me borrow some hose from someone's yard?!? and it became a right of passage for the trip to siphon petrol and cop a mouthful of diesel that would be burped for the rest of the day.
The theme Phil had set was "don't wait for perfect conditions" and challenged all that after we pray and reflect we then have to move! Gill reinforced this from Psalm 73 and Johnny Hillman gave a great word from 1 Kings and God's call to Gideon to "go with the strength you have" not the strength you don't have.
As five lively Germans headed out in their yellow VW bus the sun broke through. It had been an inspiring meeting in one of our neediest continents. Surfing has grown yet the church has declined in Europe.
Gill has joined me child-free for this trip (a very pleasant companion) and we head off to Bristol for the next phase of our Europe trip.
